How The Elijah J. Auxier Foundation Helps Families

When a child needs medical care away from home, families need more than a hospital. They need a place to land.

Our Mission

The Elijah J. Auxier Foundation is established in memory of Elijah Auxier to bring hope, encouragement, and housing assistance to support pediatric patients and their families.

This year alone, we’ve been able to walk alongside 85 families facing medical crisis.

Two Ways We Help Families Find a Place to Stay

Elijah’s Heart House

A safe landing spot outside of Portland, Oregon.

Elijah’s Heart House is more than temporary lodging. It is a place designed to give families space to rest, reconnect, and feel at home during an incredibly difficult season. Located just outside of Portland, Oregon, the space gives families a place to step away from the hospital environment without having to be far from the care their child needs.

The Heart House has a fully stocked kitchen, a living room filled with toys and games, and two bedrooms for you rest in.

At the Heart House, families can cook meals, spend time together, rest, and have space to simply be a family. It isn't about making a difficult season easy. It's about giving families a place where they can have a little breathing room.

If your family is traveling to the Portland, Oregon area for care, and you are needing a place to stay, fill out our application.

Nationwide Lodging Assistance

The Elijah J. Auxier Foundation provides lodging assistance to families across the United States whose children are receiving medical treatment away from home.

Depending on the family's circumstances and available resources, assistance may include consideration for:

  • Hotels

  • Airbnb or VRBO lodging

  • Other temporary housing

  • Lodging expenses a family has already paid

Families shouldn't have to live near the right resources to receive support. When a child needs medical care away from home, families may find themselves traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles to access the treatment their child needs. Through our lodging grants and reimbursements, we are able to help families find temporary lodging wherever their medical journey takes them. Every application is reviewed individually, and grant amounts are determined according to the needs of the family.

Rooted in Compassion.

Guided by Experience.

Elijah’s Heart House was born from lived experience and a deep understanding of how isolating medical trauma can be. What began as a response to one family’s story has grown into a mission to serve families across the United States during some of their most vulnerable moments.

We believe families belong together and that no family should navigate a medical crisis alone.
