When There's No Room, Families Still Need Somewhere to Go
When a child is unexpectedly admitted to the hospital due to a diagnosis or medical crisis, families often arrive without knowing how long they will be there.
A few days can turn into a few weeks, and families quickly find themselves navigating treatment plans, appointments, work, finances, siblings at home, and an uncertain future.
Many families are referred to Ronald McDonald House Charities for lodging, an invaluable resource for families traveling for medical care. But these homes can only accommodate so many families at a time.
When there isn't room, families may be placed on a waitlist and connected with a hospital social worker or case manager who can provide additional lodging resources.
But that still leaves a family in crisis with another problem to solve: Where will we stay, and how will we afford it?
Searching through hotel options, comparing rates, arranging transportation, and figuring out how to pay for an unknown length of stay can quickly become another overwhelming item on an already complicated to-do list. Elijah's Heart House exists to help fill that gap.
