Yes. Families must first apply to a Ronald McDonald House before applying for assistance through Elijah's Heart House. If Ronald McDonald House cannot accommodate the family, they may then apply to Elijah's Heart House.

Absoutely. A patient's social worker can complete and submit the entire application on behalf of the family.

No. Elijah's Heart House supports families whose children are receiving medical treatment that requires the family to travel away from home and stay near a medical facility.

Yes. Lodging expenses that have already been paid may be considered for reimbursement.

Hotel, Airbnb, VRBO, and other temporary lodging arrangements may be considered. Each request is reviewed individually.

There is no predetermined amount. Each application is reviewed individually, and the grant amount is determined according to the family's circumstances, needs, and available resources.

Families can live anywhere in the US to receive grants funding. Families traveling to Oregon can apply to be housed in the Arukah House located outside of Portland, Oregon.

As a hospital social worker, you are often the one helping families navigate the unexpected realities that come with a child’s medical treatment—including finding a safe, affordable place to stay when home is too far away. We deeply respect and value the work of organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, which has long been a cornerstone of support for families with children receiving medical care. However, Ronald McDonald House locations are often at capacity and may have eligibility requirements or shared-living environments that are not suitable for all children—particularly those with compromised immune systems, such as cancer or transplant patients. When these barriers exist, the Elijah J. Auxier Foundation steps in to fill the gap by providing housing options.
Our role is to complement existing resources so that families have access to appropriate housing during a medical crisis.
The Elijah J. Auxier Foundation provides temporary housing for families who must travel away from home so their child can receive critical medical care. We are a unique nonprofit dedicated specifically to providing housing assistance grants to families of children facing cancer, transplants, chronic illness, medical trauma, and other serious medical challenges.
As a pediatric oncology social worker, I recently faced a pressing situation where a family, traveling from out of state for their child's radiation treatment, confronted a sudden and challenging lodging crisis. During this critical time, Elijah's Heart Home (EHH) emerged as a beacon of hope and support. The family's distance from home exacerbated their concerns, but EHH swiftly intervened, showcasing unparalleled dedication to providing the family with a safe and comforting place to stay in our local area. Throughout this time, EHH maintained an open line of communication with me, working diligently to secure accommodations and alleviate the family's worries. Witnessing the palpable relief and gratitude on the faces of the family members highlighted the immense impact of EHH's immediate and compassionate response. Their commitment to families in crisis, particularly those navigating the added challenge of being far from home during a difficult time, is truly commendable. Heartfelt thanks to EHH for their unwavering support, making a significant difference in the lives of our young patients and their families.
