More Than a Place to Stay: How Housing Grants Support Families Facing Pediatric Medical Trauma
When children need medical care far from home, the entire family is affected. Along with the uncertainty of medical appointments, surgeries, and treatment plans, families may face another question: Where will we stay? And usually, more importantly, how will we pay for it?
Finding a place to sleep near the hospital can become an unexpected financial burden. Whether a family is preparing for surgery, navigating an unexpected hospital transfer, or staying close during prolonged treatment, lodging is just one more expense to manage during an already overwhelming season.
We believe families should be able to focus on their child and their medical care without carrying the additional burden of finding and paying for a place to stay. That's why we provide housing grants to help families facing pediatric medical trauma.
The Hidden Costs of Pediatric Medical Care
When we think about the challenges families face during a child's medical crisis, our thoughts often turn to the medical treatment itself. But the impact reaches beyond the hospital.
For families who must travel for their child's care, finding nearby lodging can be both necessary and expensive. Some stays are planned around scheduled procedures, while others happen unexpectedly as medical needs change.
Although lodging resources exist to support families, availability isn't always guaranteed. Families depend on these resources, and a lack of available rooms can mean paying for accommodations out of pocket. Providing financial assistance for lodging is one practical way we can come alongside families during this time.
How Housing Grants Help Families Stay Close
The Elijah J. Auxier Foundation provides housing assistance to families navigating pediatric medical trauma, helping relieve the cost of staying near the hospital.
Our mission is rooted in a simple belief: families need support during medical crises, and having a place to stay should not become another overwhelming obstacle.
Through housing grants, we help cover lodging expenses for families who need to remain near their child's medical care.
Sometimes that means covering a single night. Other times, it means helping with several days of accommodations or reimbursing a family for lodging expenses they've already paid.
Every grant looks a little different because every family's circumstances are different.
But the purpose remains the same: helping families stay close to the care their children need.
What Housing Grants Look Like for Families Across the Country
Behind every housing grant is a family navigating a medical journey. Recent grants from the Elijah J. Auxier Foundation demonstrates how different those needs can be and how even a few nights of lodging assistance can provide meaningful financial relief.
In Chicago, a $242 housing grant covered one night of lodging.
One night may seem small, but when a family needs to stay near the hospital, having that expense covered is a practical form of support.
In Philadelphia, a family experienced an unexpected transfer to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
When Ronald McDonald House was full, the family paid for lodging out of pocket. Elijah's Heart House provided $917 to cover six days of lodging expenses. This is an important example of why housing grants are needed. Even when established housing programs are available, there may not be enough room for every family seeking assistance.
In Boston, a $1,089 grant covered four days of lodging before and after a child's surgery.
For this family, housing assistance helped cover the cost of staying near the hospital during their child's surgical care.
Three cities. Three different circumstances. One shared need: a bed near the hospital instead of a waiting room chair. Together, these three grants provided $2,248 in lodging assistance. Each dollar went toward helping a family meet a practical need during their child's medical care.
Why Supporting the Whole Family Matters
A pediatric medical crisis doesn't affect only the child receiving treatment. It affects the family walking through it alongside them. Families may need to make decisions about travel, lodging, and finances while also navigating medical uncertainty. These may be practical challenges, but they carry emotional weight.
Our work is centered on meeting one of those needs through housing assistance. This work is made possible through the generosity of people who believe families deserve support during some of life's most difficult circumstances. Your generosity can help provide the next night of lodging for a family facing pediatric medical trauma.
Partner with Elijah's Heart House to help more families stay close when it matters most.
